In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word.  On September 24, 2018 Indian River School District Art students across grade levels participated in an international art and literacy project known as “Pinwheels for Peace.” As contributors to this international movement students placed their pinwheels with messages of peace in the schoolyards surrounding their buildings. Indian River Schools that proudly participated were Antwerp Primary, Evans Mills Primary, Philadelphia Primary, Theresa Primary, the Middle School, and the High School.

As part of the creation process Primary through High-School students recorded their thoughts about, peace, war, tolerance, living in harmony with others, and anti-bullying on one side of their pinwheels. On the reverse side, they created a design that visually expressed their feelings.  Throughout the day on September 24th students “planted” their pinwheels in their schoolyards as a public statement and incredibly powerful and collaborative art installation.

Hopefully you were able to view these beautiful works of art spinning in the wind spreading thoughts about peace throughout our local communities, the country, and the world.

Thank you to the art teachers, faculty, staff, and administration throughout the district for helping make this a memorable experience for our students.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” –Gandhi
