Choosing a Foreign Language

Indian River is proud to offer four unique Foreign Language tracks:
FRENCH
GERMAN
LATIN
SPANISH

In 8th grade, students are required* to study a Language Other Than English or "LOTE". During the spring of their 7th grade year, students will be asked to select which foreign language they wish to begin studying in 8th grade. Students who successfully pass (65%) both the foreign language course and the final proficiency exam will earn one high school credit and have the opportunity to enter the second year of study during 9th grade, if they choose to continue in the language track. The proficiency examination is traditionally scheduled the last Monday of the last week of school in June.

*It is possible that some students may not be enrolled in a foreign language if they are language exempt (IEP). Additionally, new transfer students who enter Indian River Middle School past the 5 week mark who have not previously been enrolled in a foreign language, will not be placed in a foreign language until 9th grade.

Here are some videos to help introduce you to our different foreign language programs!
