Building Academic Success at IRMS

The most important thing to remember, academic success starts with YOU. There will never be a learning situation where the student is not the most important piece of the puzzle. You will get out of middle school what you put into it, and we encourage you to make the most out of your time while you are here.

Everyone needs some help from time to time, and certainly middle school is no different. For those students that are struggling, we always encourage you to touch base with your teacher of the class you are struggling in. Who better knows the content, and how best to deliver it to you? Teachers make themselves available after class, during their Team and planning times throughout the day, and during scheduled after school times. This is almost always typically the most effective way to get additional help and support in your studies. That being said, faculty by nature are not always available during those times. It is important to remember there are other means of support available to you!

CHJC's Advantage After-School Program

Run in conjunction with the Children's Home of Jefferson County, the Advantage After-School Program is our most popular after school offering here at IRMS. This is a two headed program; one that facilitates studies, and one that facilitates fun. It can be hard for students to connect with each other throughout the school day; in classes they are busy working, in the hallways they are busy getting to class, and even at lunch they are busy eating. The AAP provides students with an opportunity to get to know their peers in a different setting, aiding in continued socialization. Students will work together while playing games, sports, activities, and even participating in smaller clubs and groups within this bigger one.

As well, this program has tutors that are provided nightly. If a student is struggling with their work, they may choose to go and spend the first hour of the program working with a tutor. It is important to note that the tutoring is optional for students, and they must choose to participate. If you are sending your student to do work, and the work is still not getting done, you may want to inquire as to how they are spending their time there. This program is staffed by the Children's Home of Jefferson County and currently meets Monday-Thursday from 2:15 p.m. - 5:15 p.m.
